There are a bewildering array of shooting disciplines. At Torbay afullbore Rifle & Pistol Club, we have members that have interests in many or most of them! There will always be someone with knowledge, or maybe just an opinion, of interest around to chat with.
On our home range on regular shoots you will find a variety of different disciplines shot alongside each other. You will have members shooting small bore rifles next to lever action gallery, or long barreled revolver. In the end lane there may be black powder pistol or muzzle-loaded black powder revolver.
For regular shoots at our home range near Newton Abbot, members bring their own targetry for use with the target frames, or shoot a club competition target. There is always something interesting to see and discuss! And often try out!
Almost all we shoot in Torbay Fullbore Rifle & Pistol Club can be classified as a target discipline. That is simply because we aim at artificial targets, be they paper, steels, clay pigeons ( used on the range also ), turning, pyro, even ballons. But there are many different flavours of target shooting disciplines where precision shooting is required to get high scores.
- Precision Target Rifle - prone or 3 position (3P), full bore, rimfire or air.
- Bench Rest - precision rifle sitting at a bench. Usually with a telescopic sight. All calibres
- Air rifle - 3 positions, indoors
- LSW - Rimfire smallbore rifle course of fire.
- Gallery Rifle - Pistol calibre carbines popular since pistols were banned.
- Fullbore target rifle - prone out to 1200xx (yards), shot at Millpool and Bisley
- "F" class rifle - for those into engineering the most precision possible
- Muzzle loaded target rifle at all ranges.
- Muzzle loaded pistol - including ML revolvers.
Small bore normally these days refers to .22LR rimfire cartridge and the firearms that shoot them. Often in the past the term "Miniature Rifle" was used. It encompasses many different disciplines and indeed there is a nation body just for small bore shooting - the National Small bore Rifle Association ( NSRA ). On any given rage day you will see members shooting Lightweight Sporting Rifle, Long Barreled Pistol or other small bore disciplines.
Whilst Torbay Fullbore Club does not have a dedicate air range, our home 25yard range can easily accommodate air rifles and pistols. Air rifle can be challenging indeed.
During the summer months, an archery evening is held at the range. It is great family fun. It is usually held in the evening after a regular club shoot.
Fullbore target disciplines are shot at our home range as well as at Paracoombe and elsewhere.
