Historical Shooting

Becoming Fred Flintstone

Historical shooting cover a wide variety of shooting. From the simplest taking a shot with an historical piece, through recreating the qualification courses of fire for former service pieces, to operating with the full historical kit and kaboodle as used when the piece was the latest and greatest thing, historical shooting covers it all.

There is much interest in how the pieces work. Indeed it can be quite the project to get, say, a reproduction muzzle loading cap 'n ball revolver running reliably - reliably enough for a competition of 4 targets, 13 shots each of which the best ten count. And lets not think about the cleaning involved......

Whilst there is no formal "Historical Shooting" section in the club, there can been seen a wide variety of historical pieces on any given range day such as

  • Black powder single shot pistols
  • Black powder American Civil War cap 'n ball revolvers
  • Lee-enfields are very popular
  • Sharps American Civil War rifles
  • Even a Whitworth hexagonal bore rifle can oft be seen

In addition to the interest in the pieces themselves is the knowledgeable discussion to be had about history, practicality and all sorts of topics.
